January has gotten off to a hectic start, but I know it's pregnant with growth that will propel us through the rest of the year.  My husband, James, was laid off in July 2013 and although he did some temporary work for Yamaha in the month of September, he was soon out of work again and we were left to survive on my measly income alone.  We spent months pondering and considering our options about what we could do to stay afloat but coincidentally when we travelled home to San Diego for Christmas, we learned that my mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was going to begin fighting it this year.  This made our decision very simple and we ultimately decided to move in with my family for a few months so that we could take care of my mom, and at the same time save money to get back on our feet.  It was a bittersweet conclusion, as we dearly miss our friends and family that we've left behind in Anaheim and Long Beach, but we come up to visit nearly every other weekend in order to keep our ties.  Moving was a royal pain, and at the same time it was very sad for me.  I hated to leave our apartment, the place where our marriage begin and where so many fun memories were made with our closest friends.  It was my palace, the place where I was the queen and where I became a homemaker.  But life happens, and sometimes you need to grow up, pick up your crap and move on with your life.  So we're San Diegans now.

An additional benefit to moving home was the abundance of "free" time that I have.  I quit my job during the first week of the year and haven't necessarily begun my new-job hunt.  I figure if it takes me a month or two it's okay because it will allow me to better take care of my mom after she has her first surgery in February.  But what I meant to say when I said that it was a benefit was that I have more time to pursue my photography and more time to prepare for the wedding I will be shooting in September.

Yessenia, my photography mentor, has been kind enough to give me "lessons" that I can do long-distance, which will help me prepare for the times that we meet in person (and also for her big day!).  Most recently we covered Exposure, which combines aperture, ISO, and shutter speed.  I found some great Pinterest infographics which helped me to solidify the concepts, and I just submitted my first assignment today.  I wanted to post a flickr slideshow of some of my first few shots for you all to see.  I want to be transparent and I am open to critique, I only ask that you be kind!
