Double Dose

This past weekend I had the opportunity to take a few photos of some newborn twin baby boys.  Shooting babies isn't easy because their behavior and mood is unpredictable, but they have got to be the cutest subjects out there.  This set of twins came two weeks early and so they were still both so tiny!  One was a bit more cooperative than the other but maybe that was just an early sense of sibling rivalry in bloom.  ;)

The Apple of My Eye

Say hello to my [not so little] friend.

Today when I arrived home from my mom's doctor appointments I was greeted by a beautiful brown UPS box... it nearly paralyzed me.  I'm not even joking, I started wheezing and I had to sit down; I was SO EXCITED.  I never wanted to become a "professional" photographer--I never planned to make a life out of this and I definitely never meant to invest so much moolah into it, but what can I say?  I'm hooked!  Needless to say, it was time to invest in a better camera.  As much as I love (and highly recommend) my Sony DSC-RX100, it is technically only a point-and-shoot camera, and there's no way I'm building a business with only that type of gear.  After quite a bit of research (and budget analysis!) I decided on the 60D, which also happens to be the same camera that my friend/mentor Yessenia uses for her shoots (which makes things nice and easy for us).  I'm so stoked to break it in this week and to test out its capabilities.  As I was opening the box I was having "flash-forwards" (as opposed to flashbacks) imagining all of the things I will learn and do in the next year with photography.  I'm scared and excited and nervous and elated all at once.

So naturally I did a photo shoot of my camera, as ironic as that sounds.  Welcome to the world, baby D!

My total haul!

(I don't know why, but when I first opened this silhouette image of the camera without any lens, the song "Farmer in the Dell" immediately popped into my head.  The cheese stands alone, the cheese stands alone, hi-ho the dairy-oh the cheese stands alone!)

Cats and Dogs!

On the last Friday in February, the 28th to be exact, my beloved mama underwent a double mastectomy and TRAM-reconstruction to remove the invasive ductile carcinoma (breast cancer) that had invaded her body.  It was such an ominous day as it was the only weekend of the year that we've had any significant rain.  It rained and poured from the moment she left the house until the day she came home!  She spent 5 days in the hospital before coming home, and ever since then it's been me and her, at home every day.  She calls me her "nursemaid" as I am at her beck and call every hour of every day, and at first it was pretty rough as she could hardly do anything for herself at all.  Nowadays she is much more independent and is moving around perfectly, so I'm off the hook for the most part.  But it certainly hasn't slowed down my time behind the camera!  Unfortunately (?) I wasn't shooting photo as much as I've been shooting video because I am slowly putting together a cancer/reconstruction documentary for her to have and to show any friends that are faced with the same decision she had to make about her health and her future.  We've had many guests and many bouquets passing through this house, so I couldn't resist snapping a photo or two.

(my mom LOVES piggies... so her coworkers sent her this cute arrangement!  They are so bright pink that they look fake!)

(taken the week before her surgery, this is me and my mama)

Aside from the homecare, I've really enjoyed hanging out with my mom and spending time with her that we haven't had for years.  My parents have a dog that is getting pretty old, and has pretty severe health complications across the board, but whom they love nonetheless.  They love her so much they even asked me to take a few photos of her so that her [miracle] vet could hang them on his wall...  Needless to say, I soon found myself at the park snapping my first K9 photos.  And because I was doing doggy photos, I will [of-course] include some kitty photos here as well.

Foxy the Dogue.

This is my cat Oreo who I love more than I probably should.  I have loooooved being home with her lately, and I'm sure (?) she's enjoying being such an easy subject when I just have the itch to take a photo of something nearby.  :P
